The latest development in the battle against erectile dysfunction is in the hands of a new trial to test whether the drug Cialis works to cure it.
The makers of Cialis, which is marketed as the "little blue pill" for impotence, have been approached by the Food and Drug Administration over the drug's use for a "substantial amount of time".
"We are very disappointed that the agency is aware of the increased concern that these studies may cause adverse reactions to the drug," Dr Paul Geller, the chief executive of GSK, told reporters this month.
"However, we are aware that there are a number of serious adverse reactions associated with the use of Cialis," he said. "The drug does not have a placebo effect, and hence the side effects associated with this drug are very low."
The drug is made by Eli Lilly and Company, which has been the biggest supplier of Cialis since it was introduced in the UK in 2003. But the company says that the drug is "very safe" and is not likely to cause adverse effects, which it believes may include erectile dysfunction.
While the FDA has not approved Cialis for sale in the UK under the brand name of Viagra, it is likely to be sold as "Cialis" in the United States in the form of a "Tadalafil" tablet, which is marketed as the "little blue pill".
The company also has received calls from people who have bought the drug without a prescription from Lilly. It has also received a letter from a customer who says that the drug has been clinically proven to be effective in treating erectile dysfunction.
The warning about the drug comes after reports of an increased risk of cardiac events after taking Cialis. Some men who have taken the drug had a higher chance of a heart attack or stroke, a stroke or sudden death.
The study was presented at the American College of Cardiology Annual Scientific Session in September. The drug has been studied as part of a clinical trial for treating erectile dysfunction in men who have undergone radical prostatectomy. It has been shown that Cialis, in the form of a "Tadalafil" tablet, is effective at reducing symptoms of erectile dysfunction.
"The safety and efficacy of Cialis has been established in a large number of patients with erectile dysfunction. This is a very important clinical trial to determine if Cialis will help men suffering from erectile dysfunction who have been taking the drug," Dr Geller toldThe Associated Press. "Cialis is a well-established medication used to treat erectile dysfunction."
A separate study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in November found that men taking the drug were less likely to have a heart attack or stroke. The study showed that the drug reduced the risk of getting a heart attack or stroke, which was the most significant risk factor.
"It does appear that Cialis is working as a treatment for erectile dysfunction," Dr Geller said. "It is believed that Cialis is being used to treat impotence."
The company is currently working with the FDA to develop a new product to treat impotence, called "Sildenafil".
The FDA has not commented on the study.
It is not known whether Cialis will be distributed worldwide, although the drug is available in more than 100 countries.
Dr Paul Geller said the drug's manufacturer, Pfizer, has approached the FDA twice to promote the drug.
The company has been working to develop the new drug.
Dr Geller said that the FDA will consider the risks of taking Cialis and the safety of the drug. He said that some of the risks of taking Cialis are as follows:
"It is important to note that these risks are very low and the benefits of taking the drug outweigh the risk. The benefits of taking the drug outweigh the risks of adverse events," Dr Geller said. "The risks of taking Cialis should be discussed with your doctor and the risks of side effects should be discussed with your doctor."
The company also has a "comprehensive" warning about the risk of side effects of Cialis.
"This is the most serious adverse reaction of all drugs to Cialis. This is a serious reaction, and it is very serious. You can never be sure what may be in your body without some kind of warning," Dr Geller said.
1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).
2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.
3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are the key drug-food interactions to be aware of:
We check each unique response every time we provide live results. Because we only use time-labile drug levels, we use date- healer methods to avoid missing data.
We use the Hawaii dosage for most medications. The maximum daily dose is 100 mg.
We may need to charge a percentage of the total cost for the medication.
Cialis has been shown to cause some mild side effects. Talk to your health care provider if these do not go away within a few days. If you begin to experience more serious reactions, seek medical attention immediately.
Common side effects reported from Cialis use include:
More severe side effects include:
If you experience any of these side effects, seek medical attention immediately. These are symptoms of a severe adverse reaction to this medication that require immediate treatment.
As with all prescription medications, inform your doctor of any medical conditions you currently manage. Tell them about any and all medications, prescription drugs, and supplements you are taking before starting treatment with Cialis. Cialis can interact with bodily substances, causing potentially serious adverse reactions.
Specifically, you should inform your health care provider of any alpha-blocker, antifungal, HIV protease inhibitor, or high blood pressure medication you are taking. Remember to mention any herbal products you use, especially St. John’s wort.
In addition, let your doctor know if you have recently had heart surgery or experience chest pain during sex. If you experience any changes in your heartbeat or chest pain during sex, contact your health care provider immediately.
